Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I have been in business for 25 years. By being in the right place at the right time, i acquired my historic log cabin from a neighbor who was going to burn the structure.
What is your primary product or service?
My primary product is a country getaway for people who would like to experience how our pioneers lived in the 1800s without electricity. However, you will have a comfortable bed to sleep in, not a straw mattress. I also offer pioneer workshops for individuals and groups. I work on the honor system, having handmade baskets, herbal soaps, folkart and some antiques available for sale. Guests buy the products by leaving a note on the table with money. UPDATE: I now have electricity in my cabin. You can still use the oil lamps and candles, if you prefer to live in the 1800s style.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
For many years i have been interested in log cabins. My first experience was having a gift shop in a log cabin in Georgetown, KY. When i learned there was an old cabin in my community about to be destroyed, i could not resist. So, i moved it to my farm, restored it, and have had many visitors and events since 1991.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
My place is unique since it is non electric, and i offer such a variety of workshops, field trips, and events. I know of no one else in my area, that has such a business. Update: I now have electricity for the comfort of my guests.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
This is my only log cabin getaway. No, i don't have expansion plans as far as having other log cabins. However, i do have plans to offer other workshops and events. I have vintage sales, previously i have had Vintage on the Creek twice a year, with many vendors selling their wares. This year, i plan to have Pickin on the Porch, probably in June. This will be a half price sale of vintage items.
Provide detailed directions to your location
From Lexington you drive North on I-75. Take the Owenton/Corinth Exit 144. Turn right off exit. Drive about 1 mile to stop sign in Corinth. Turn left on Hwy. 25, then about 1/4mi. turn right on 330 East. It's 4 miles across this road. At stop sign on Hwy. 36 turn right. You will see a country grocery on the right called Crooked Creek General Store. You continue up the hill and down the next hill. At bottom of hill, you will be turning left onto Scaffold Lick Creek Rd. My cabin is just 1/4 mi. off highway on the right.
What type of payments do you accept?
I accept two forms of payment, personal check if mailed two weeks prior to your overnight stay. Or you may pay by PayPal through my website.
Which areas do you service?
Not sure what is meant by this question, i service any and all areas, anyone who would like to spend the night or take a workshop.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I own my business. It isn't open on a daily basis. You must call ahead to schedule an overnight stay or a workshop. I have basket and chair weaving classes, plus wild herbal identification workshops. 859-322-3082
What are your hours of operation?
I'm open from March through November by appointment only.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
The compliment that many have paid me. This is the most relaxing place I have ever been. This is a hidden treasure, and this is like Heaven on earth.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
I have more than one. I like the 3rd chapter of Ecc. A time and place for everything. A time to be born, a time to die, etc.
I also like Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you.
